| Intro
The Epson Perfection 1240U fails somewhere between the budget and
professional scanners of the world. With a street price of £150.00p it is
just above the price of the lower cost scanners, yet has an optical
scanning resolution of 1200 X 2400 dpi and the plug and play USB
interface puts it firmly in the professional market. It would almost be
true to say, a professional scanner for the price of a budget one.
Highs
This is one super fast scanner, its pre scan is unbelievably fast at
just under 9 seconds, a full bed colour scan at 300 dpi is completed in 40
seconds flat. A similar scan at 600 dpi needed just 2 minutes and 34
seconds. Finally a text/line art 720 dpi scan needs only 33 seconds. Its
also worth pointing out that this is a very quiet scanner which makes it
ideal for use in the home/home office as well as commercial office
environments.
Lows
So far its been all praise for the Epson 1240U scanner. Now as many of
you may be aware here at BHN Reviews, we tend to put products through the
mill. In fact we use them for real, this scanner has over the last few
weeks scanned well over 2000 document/photos. All without complaint.
Unfortunately we have come across one small, but annoying problem. The
underside of the glass scanning bed has become contaminated with fine dust
and one small piece of fibre. We think this could be because the dust was
inside the scanner from new and slowly over time settled on the underside
of the scanning bed. Or due to air being drawn in and out of the scanner
as it warms up and cools down again, bringing with it small amounts of
dust. This may be an isolated problem that just affected our review
sample.

Conclusion
Anyone looking for a fast, quiet and reliable scanner, that can scan at
up to an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi need look no further. Add
to this its initial relatively low purchase price and its software bundle,
and you have a scanner worth owning.
